  • Identify the concept of palliative care and its role in management of illness
  • Apply the principles of palliative care to manage pain by pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches
  • Understand the challenges of breaking bad news
  • Recognize factors contributing to the prognosis of various life limiting illnesses, recognize EOL and trajectory events referred to as actively dying or imminent death
  • Define code status and understand principles of DNA CPR

Course Description and Scheme

1.    Description of Course & Scheme of Study

This will be a 26-week certificate program.

  1. 24-week self-study model with synchronous online sessions : This program comprises of prerecorded video lectures by palliative care /oncology experts and interactive online teaching sessions.
  2. Online learning of 24 weeks is conducted via NUMS digital e-learning portal, accessible to faculty and participants through their personal accounts.
  3. A hybrid workshop on communication skill is conducted at NUMS campus. In this workshop participants from Rawalpindi and Islamabad participate physically whereas rest of the participant participate through zoom link.

 

2.    Curriculum Outline:

The basics and advance management of palliative care will be divided into 4 modules.

  1. Introduction to Palliative Care
  2. Ethical issues at the end of life
  3. Public health and palliative care
  4. Symptom management

 

This certificate program is of 12 credit hours; details are given in the table below.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this module, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the ethical issues towards the end of life and relevant choice of treatments
  • Understand the Golden standard framework and its relevance to local practices, principles of peri-death care with cultural sensitivities
  • Provide and verify a death certificate
  • Inform relatives with empathy, referral to coroner/funeral services according to local rules
  • Recognize stages of grief and depression
  • Look after oneself, practice resilience and guide carers
  • Navigate through the difficult journey
